Marlin Lodge, Mozambique

Marlin Lodge, Benguerra Island

Marlin Lodge features 19 elegantly elevated wood and thatch chalets each with private patio and walkways to the white sandy beach below. Bask beneath sunsets that resonate deep within, and recline yourself to a slower paced way of life. Marlin Lodge inspires a lazy afternoon siesta, or a leisurely stroll along the beautiful sands of Benguerra Island. If you care to leave the shore then try your hand at the Scuba diving or deep sea fishing, reputed to be some of the best in the World. Marlin Lodge can be reached by boat or air from Vilanculos on the Mozambique mainland.

One of my special memories while working in Mozambique was taking a Dhow trip from Vilanculos across to Benguerra which took 2 hours due to the tides, instead of 20 minutes by speedboat! It summed up the relaxed and laidback feel of these idyllic Islands, just floating with the breeze meandering in between the sand channels.

Quilalea, Quirimbas Archipelago

The island resort of Quilalea accommodates 18 guests in 9 luxury "island villas". Each villa is constructed entirely with indigenous materials and handcrafted timber, opening onto a private veranda with panoramic sea views. The restaurant and lounge is no more than a two-minute walk from the most distant villa. Set on a peninsula at the north end of the island, the restaurant offers beautiful ocean views to both the west and the east. Indulge in the flavours and spices of Mozambican cuisine. Quilalea can be reached by a 20 minute air transfer from Pemba Airport.

Vamizi Island Lodge, Quirimbas Archipelago

Vamizi Island lodge is a spectacular 24-bed lodge built on the northern side of the island and looks out towards Rongui. The lodge comprises of ten separate beach houses, which are all secluded from each other and look out to sea from the shade of the forest that forms the centre of the island. Vamizi Island lodge has been designed to complement the environment and to cause as little damage to it as possible. The construction uses almost entirely local materials - timber, thatch and stone all come from the mainland or the islands themselves - thus providing help to the local economy. Marine activities include world-class blue water fishing and fly fishing, as well as scuba diving and snorkelling in some of the most pristine coral reefs of the Indian Ocean.
